Travel Currency Tips for Pakistanis
Mid-market rates (shown above) are the "real" exchange rate — the one banks use to trade with each other. You'll never get this rate at a counter. Banks and exchange houses add a margin of 1–3%, airport counters 5–10%, and some cards charge an additional 2–3% in foreign transaction fees.
Best Ways to Carry Money Abroad
USD Cash
For Gulf states, Thailand, and most countries, carrying some USD cash is useful. Exchange it locally once you arrive — rates in Dubai, Bangkok, Istanbul are typically better than Pakistan or arrival airports. Pakistani regulations allow carrying up to $10,000 cash per person on international travel without declaration.
Pakistani Debit/Credit Cards
Pakistani-issued Visa and Mastercard work internationally for ATM withdrawals and point-of-sale purchases, but:
- Enable international usage via your bank app before departure
- Set per-transaction and daily limits appropriate for travel
- Expect 2–3% foreign transaction fee + exchange margin
- Notify the bank of travel dates to avoid fraud blocks
Prepaid Travel Cards
HBL, UBL, Meezan and other Pakistani banks offer prepaid USD/EUR/GBP travel cards. You load PKR, it converts at the day's rate, then spend as that foreign currency with no further conversion markup abroad. Good for predictability.
Wise, Payoneer, Revolut
Multi-currency digital accounts are increasingly used by Pakistanis who travel often or work remotely. Wise offers true mid-market exchange with a small transparent fee. Note: Wise requires overseas residency verification for some features.
Which Currencies to Carry Where
- UK: GBP — don't exchange in Pakistan; airports/high streets give poor rates. Use Pakistani card at ATM in London or Wise.
- USA: USD cash + card
- Schengen Europe: EUR — card works everywhere, carry small EUR cash for taxis/tips
- UAE: AED — exchange in Dubai (better rates than Pakistan)
- Saudi Arabia: SAR — exchange on arrival
- Thailand: USD cash → exchange to THB in Bangkok
- Malaysia: USD → MYR in KL, or MYR directly
- Turkey: USD or EUR cash → TRY as needed; avoid airport rates
Common Mistakes
- Exchanging at Pakistani airport: rates are 3–5% worse than city exchange houses
- Using Pakistani card for Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC): at POS abroad, always pay in local currency, not PKR — DCC adds hidden margin
- Carrying too much cash: theft risk, declaration requirements if above $10K
- Not checking card balance in travel currency: after conversion, your "USD" prepaid card might show less than expected
