Travel Insurance Basics for Pakistanis
Travel insurance covers unexpected costs during international travel — medical treatment, hospitalisation, trip cancellation, lost baggage, personal liability. For Pakistani passport holders, it's often mandatory for visa approval and strongly recommended regardless.
When Insurance Is Mandatory
- Schengen Visa: €30,000 minimum medical coverage, valid in all Schengen states
- Russia Visa: required minimum coverage specified by consulate
- Cuba: mandatory insurance for all visitors
- Some tour operators: require insurance as condition of booking
What Should Be Covered
Medical Emergency
The most important coverage. Hospital stays in Europe and North America can cost $5,000–$50,000 per day. For USA/Canada, insurers recommend $500,000+ minimum. For Europe, Asia, Middle East, $100,000–$250,000 is usually sufficient.
Medical Evacuation / Repatriation
Being flown home with medical escort can cost $100,000+. This is almost always included in good policies.
Trip Cancellation and Interruption
Reimburses non-refundable costs if you cancel for covered reasons (illness, bereavement, natural disaster, political unrest at destination).
Baggage Loss / Delay
Compensation if airlines lose or delay your checked bags. Usually $500–$2,000 per person.
Personal Liability
Covers legal costs if you accidentally injure someone or damage property. Especially useful for adventure travel, skiing, rentals.
What's Usually NOT Covered
- Pre-existing medical conditions (unless disclosed and surcharge paid)
- Pregnancy complications (after certain week)
- Mental health treatment
- Injuries from extreme sports (skydiving, mountaineering above certain altitude)
- Alcohol or drug-related incidents
- Acts of war or terrorism in high-risk zones
- Travel against government advisory
Buying Travel Insurance from Pakistan
Local Providers
- Jubilee General Insurance (JGICL)
- EFU Insurance
- Adamjee Insurance
- Pak Qatar General Takaful
Local providers issue Schengen-compliant policies accepted by all Schengen embassies. Premiums are often lower than international providers but customer service in emergencies can be slower.
International Providers (via Online Agents)
- SafetyWing (good for digital nomads, long-term)
- IMG Global
- AXA Schengen (often cheapest for Schengen minimum)
- World Nomads (adventure travel)
- Allianz
How to Choose
- Match the destination requirement — Schengen requires €30,000 minimum
- Check the policy covers the full trip — some providers exclude Pakistan nationals or require residency
- Read exclusions carefully — pre-existing conditions, adventure activities
- Confirm 24/7 emergency assistance — number should work from your destination
- Save the policy on your phone — carry both digital and printed copy
Common Questions
Can I buy insurance after I arrive at the destination?
Most policies require purchase before departure. Some providers (like SafetyWing) allow mid-trip purchase, but coverage typically starts 24 hours later and excludes any condition that began before you bought.
Does my credit card cover travel insurance?
Some Pakistani premium credit cards (HBL Visa Infinite, UBL World Elite) include basic travel insurance when you pay for the trip with the card. Coverage levels vary — rarely enough to meet Schengen's €30,000 requirement standalone.
What about COVID-19?
Most 2026 policies now treat COVID-19 like any other illness — covered under medical emergency unless specifically excluded. Confirm with your provider.
