Pakistan Passport Renewal — Complete 2026 Guide
Last updated: October 2026 · 10 minute read
Your Pakistani passport is required for all international travel. This guide covers everything about renewing it in 2026 — from DGIP offices in Pakistan to Pakistani missions abroad, standard and urgent service, and the new e-Passport.
When to Renew
Renew your passport:
- Within 1 year of expiry if you travel internationally
- If you have less than 6 months validity (many countries require 6+ months)
- When you run out of blank pages
- If your name, address, or other details change
- Immediately if lost, stolen, or damaged
You can renew up to 1 year before expiry with no penalty. Remaining validity is not transferred — you get a fresh 5 or 10 year passport from the issue date.
Types of Pakistani Passports
Machine Readable Passport (MRP)
Standard Pakistani passport since 2004. Available in 36-page and 72-page options, with 5-year or 10-year validity. Suitable for most travellers.
e-Passport (Biometric)
Rolled out progressively from 2024. Contains an embedded chip with biometric data for faster international immigration clearance. Available in major DGIP centres; being extended nationwide. Slightly higher fee but preferred for frequent international travellers.

Overseas Pakistanis — Renewing Abroad
Pakistani embassies and consulates abroad issue new passports to overseas Pakistanis. Major missions:
- London, Manchester, Bradford (UK)
- New York, Washington, Houston, Los Angeles (US)
- Toronto (Canada)
- Dubai, Abu Dhabi (UAE)
- Riyadh, Jeddah (Saudi Arabia)
- Many other embassies worldwide
Process Abroad
- Book appointment at the mission (website varies)
- Attend with current passport, CNIC/NICOP, fee
- Biometrics captured
- Processing time: typically 4–8 weeks (longer than Pakistan)
- Collect or receive by courier
NICOP (National ID Card for Overseas Pakistanis) is often required. If you don't have one, apply for it first through NADRA.
Lost or Stolen Passports
If your passport is lost or stolen:
- File a police report (FIR) immediately
- If abroad, report to nearest Pakistani mission
- Apply for a replacement passport (treated as new application)
- Expect additional scrutiny — repeated losses can trigger investigation
Common Issues
Name Mismatches
Your passport name must match your CNIC exactly. If CNIC and passport names differ, you may need to update CNIC first (via NADRA) before renewing passport.
Clearance Required
Certain cases require Ministry of Interior clearance (specific professions, previous legal issues, name changes). This adds 4–12 weeks to processing.
Expired Passport Used for Visa Application
If a visa (UK, US, Schengen) is stamped in a passport that then expires or you renew, the visa remains valid. Travel with both old (with visa) and new passport.
