Visa Stay vs Visa Validity — Know the Difference
These are two separate dates:
- Visa validity: the period during which you can enter the country (e.g., "valid until 15 Jan 2027")
- Authorized stay: how long you can remain inside the country after entering (e.g., "90 days per entry")
A 5-year multiple-entry visa might only allow 90 days per entry. If you stay 95 days, you've overstayed — even though the visa is still "valid" for years.
Common Visa Stay Durations
- Schengen Visa (Type C): 90 days in any 180-day period
- UK Standard Visitor: 180 days per entry
- US B1/B2: up to 180 days (determined by CBP officer at entry, not visa)
- Canada Visitor: up to 180 days (stamped at airport)
- UAE Tourist: 30, 60, or 90 days depending on visa type
- Turkey e-Visa: 30 days per entry
- Thailand Tourist: 60 days, extendable by 30
- Umrah Visa: 90 days total
Where to Find Your Authorized Stay
Entry Stamp
When you arrive at the airport, the immigration officer stamps your passport with the date and often writes the "must leave by" date beside it. This stamp is the authoritative source.
I-94 (US)
For US visits, your authorized stay is on your I-94 record (not the visa itself). Check at i94.cbp.dhs.gov.
E-Visa / E-TA Confirmation
Electronic visas (Turkey e-Visa, Thai eVisa, Canada eTA) state the maximum stay in the approval email.
Visa Sticker
Traditional visa stickers show validity. For stay, check the visa type notation on your sticker (e.g., "C/90" means Category C visa, 90-day stay).
Consequences of Overstay
- UAE: AED 50/day fine, immigration ban if severe
- Saudi Arabia: fines up to SAR 100,000, 5-year ban
- Schengen: entry refusal, 5-year ban, biometrics flagged
- UK: impacts future visa applications permanently
- USA: any overstay > 180 days = 3-year ban; > 365 days = 10-year ban
- Canada: inadmissibility, future refusals
How to Avoid Accidental Overstay
- Count your days from entry stamp — not from visa issue date
- Entry day counts as day 1 (not day 0)
- Exit day also counts as a day used
- Set a phone reminder 1 week before must-leave date
- Keep boarding passes and entry stamp photos as proof
- If delayed by illness, flight cancellation, or emergency, document everything and contact immigration
If You Need to Stay Longer
Visa Extension
Most countries allow one extension per entry at an immigration office before your current stay expires. Apply at least 7 days before expiry. Fees vary.
Border Run
Some countries (Thailand, Malaysia) allow leaving and re-entering to reset the clock. Each new entry gets a fresh stay. Rules change — some countries limit the number of border runs per year.
Change of Status
If your purpose changes (tourist → student → worker), you may need to change visa status rather than just extend. This requires separate application and often leaving the country.
