UK Student Visa from Pakistan — Complete 2026 Guide
Last updated: October 2026 · 10 minute read
The UK Student Visa (previously called Tier 4) is the route Pakistani students use to pursue degrees at UK universities. This guide walks you through everything — from offer letter to visa approval — specifically for Pakistani applicants.
Who Can Apply
You can apply for a UK Student Visa if you:
- Have an unconditional offer from a UK institution licensed by UKVI
- Can prove English language proficiency (IELTS, PTE Academic, or exemption)
- Have enough money to pay for your course and support yourself
- Have consent from parent(s) if you're under 18
- Meet academic entry requirements for your chosen course
Step 1 — Get a CAS from Your University
A CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is a unique reference number your UK university issues after you accept their offer and pay the required tuition deposit. Without a CAS, you cannot start the visa application.
A CAS is valid for 6 months. Apply for your visa within this window. Each CAS can only be used once; if your application is refused, the university must issue a new one.
Step 2 — Prove English Proficiency
Minimum scores accepted by UKVI (for below-degree level courses):
- IELTS for UKVI (Academic): 4.0 in each component
- For degree-level courses, universities typically require IELTS 6.0–6.5+ overall
Some universities accept their own internal English test or waive the requirement if you studied in English medium. Always confirm with your university — their requirement often exceeds UKVI's minimum.
Step 3 — Financial Requirement
You must show you can pay:
- First year of tuition fees (as stated on your CAS)
- Living costs: £1,334/month if studying in London, £1,023/month outside London, for up to 9 months
For a typical one-year master's in London, you need to show approximately £28,000–£35,000 (tuition + 9 months living = ~PKR 10–13 million).
The 28-Day Rule
The required funds must be held in your account (or your parent's account if they're sponsoring you) for 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of your visa application. Any dip below the required amount during this period resets the clock.
Accepted Account Types
- Savings or current account
- Fixed deposit (if easily accessible)
- In your name or your parent's/legal guardian's name (with birth certificate proving relationship)
Not accepted: shares, bonds, overdrafts, business accounts, pension funds, credit cards.
Step 4 — Pay the Fees
- Visa fee (outside UK): £524
- Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £776 per year of visa
For a 1-year master's, total fees are approximately £524 + £776 = £1,300 (PKR 460,000+).
Step 5 — Complete the Online Application
Apply at gov.uk/student-visa/apply. You can apply up to 6 months before your course starts. Keep ready: passport details, CAS number, English test certificate, financial proof, academic transcripts.
Step 6 — Book Biometrics
After submitting online, book an appointment at a UKVCAS centre (operated by VFS Global in Pakistan). Centres are in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. At the appointment, you'll have your fingerprints and photo taken and submit your supporting documents.
Step 7 — Processing Times from Pakistan
- Standard: 3 weeks after biometrics
- Priority (24-hour): ~£500 extra
- Super Priority (same day): ~£1,000 extra
Interview and Credibility
UKVI may ask you to attend a short video credibility interview. They assess whether you're a genuine student with real intent to study. Common questions:
- Why did you choose this course and university?
- What are your long-term career plans?
- How did you fund your studies?
- Who else in your family lives in the UK?
Answer honestly. Memorised scripts come across as rehearsed and can trigger refusal. Know your course modules and university location.
Working on a Student Visa
You can work:
- Up to 20 hours per week during term time (for full-time degree-level courses)
- Full-time during vacations
- Through placements or internships that form part of your course
You cannot: work as self-employed, run a business, work as a professional sportsperson or entertainer, or take permanent full-time employment.
Bringing Dependants
Since January 2024, only students on postgraduate research courses (PhD, Research Masters) or those sponsored by their government can bring dependants (spouse, children). Masters-by-taught students cannot bring family members on dependant visas.
Post-Study Options
Graduate Route (2-year post-study work visa)
After completing a UK degree, you can apply for the Graduate Route visa — 2 years for undergraduate/master's graduates, 3 years for PhD. No sponsor needed. You can work in any job at any skill level.
Skilled Worker Visa
If you find a job with a licensed sponsor paying above the minimum salary threshold, you can switch to a Skilled Worker visa — a direct path to permanent residence after 5 years.
Common Refusal Reasons
- Funds not held for the full 28 days
- CAS issued incorrectly or expired
- Weak credibility — vague answers in interview
- Previous visa refusals not declared
- Deposit from unexplained source without supporting evidence
- Translated documents without certified translator stamp
After Approval
You'll receive a 30-day vignette (sticker in your passport) to travel to the UK. Within 10 days of arrival (or before your vignette expires), collect your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) from the Post Office named on your decision letter. Your BRP is valid for the full length of your visa.
